This dropped out of my attention but on April 18, Microsoft released Cumulative Update 16 (KB5011644) for SQL Server 2019 running on Windows.
The CU affects both the SQL Server Engine as well as the Analysis Services.
The below important disclaimer is copied as is, from the Microsoft KB page.
Important: TDE-compressed backups that are made by using SQL Server 2019 CU 16 and later cannot be restored to previous CU versions of SQL Server 2019. For more information, see FIX: Error 3241 occurs during executing RESTORE LOG or RESTORE DATABASE.
Transparent Data Encryption (TDE)-compressed backups that are made by using previous CU versions of SQL Server 2019 can still be restored by using SQL Server 2019 CU 16 and later versions.
Below is the table with the new product versions after applying the latest CU:
Component | Product version | File version |
---|---|---|
SQL Server | 15.0.4223.1 | 2019.150.4223.1 |
Analysis Services | 15.0.35.23 | 2018.150.35.23 |
You can read more on the release and the multiple fixes that it brings with it by visiting this link KB5011644 – Cumulative Update 16 for SQL Server 2019 and also getting the relevant download links.
You can read if CU or GDR is the choice for you by reading the post SQL Server patching: GDR vs CU.
As always, test before applying to production instances.
Happy patching!
